About the Festival

Taking the numerous similar manifestations dedicated to science popularization as a model, the main aim of the Science Festival in Belgrade is to connect and to establish communication

between the public and the scientific institutions which seldom have an opportunity to get to the wider audience in order to introduce and explain the significance of the scientific accomplishments in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, mathematics and other areas.

If we do not comprehend the importance of investing in science, it can not develop, and without fresh achievements we can not expect further development of modern society. On the other hand, taxpayers deserve to be adequately informed about results achieved so far, especially considering the fact that science is mostly financed from public funding.

Without such two-way communication, which should bring the science closer to the insufficiently informed audience, there will still be widely accepted prejudice about the scientists as the eccentrics who just waste governmental budget. There will also remain the unreasonable fear of genetically modified tomato and paprika, nuclear energy, cloned sheep etc. And the public will keep on ignoring the ecologists’ warnings and recommendations about the air and water pollution and global heating.

And that is exactly purpose of the Science Festival – to use the wide spectrum of presentation methods in order to introduce, explain and promote the science in a way that would be equally acceptable and understandable to each and every visitor, regardless of their age. This is probably the most important aspect of this manifestation. Experiences in other countries in which similar festivals were organized have all shown that public audience has to get a chance to be put in scientists’ shoes, to discover how the world looks like under a microscope, what is the secret of chemical reactions and, the most important, how do we widen our knowledge.
